Rare and Declining Birds in Boulder County (4)

American Bittern

Considered a common breeding species during the early twentieth century (Betts 1913), this shy heron now nests in only a few isolated cattail marshes, including Sawhill Ponds, Boulder Reservoir, and South Boulder Creek near Marshall Road.

Red-headed Woodpecker

Betts classified this primarily eastern woodpecker as a common summer resident, and Alexander (1937) described it as fairly common. The most recent active nest in the county was near Lefthand Creek at the intersection of Oxford Road and North 41st Street during the early 1990s. Primary concerns include competition for nesting sites from European starlings and habitat loss from snag removal (Kingery 1998).
